2015 "All You Monsters", an essay was written for Mark Peter Wright's exhibition "I, The Thing In the Margins" at IMT Gallery, London, 11th October, 2015 - 22nd November, 2015. Read it here.
2015 "An ABC of Exotica: Recording Corvids Badly (2006 - 2013)" is an essay in "Less Apparent Horizon", a collection of twelve openings of the space between words and sound published by Mullzimmer. My text narrates attempts to record members of the crow family over the years and the images are of tokens retained from each site: a cigarette, a stone, a bullet case, a feather, a coin. The plan is for "An ABC of Exotica" to eventually expand to include an alphabet of all the birds I have 'recorded badly'. You can read it here.
2015 "The God's Eye and the Buffalo's Breath" is a paper developed from a presentation given at the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology conference in Viseu, Portugal, organised by Raquel Castro and Miguel Carvalhais. You can read my essay as part of the proceedings or go straight to the article.
2014 "Five Found Files" is a text piece for Writing Sound 2 at the Lydgalleriet, Bergen, Norway. Read it here.

2010 "Earlids and Brainlids", first published on the blog 'limited language' (2006) then in the book Autumn Leaves (2007) and then in the collection Limited Language: Responding to Feedback Culture, edited by Colin Davies and Monica Parrinder (2010). Read it here.

2005 "Once A Certain Notion" a commentary essay for Photoworks magazine. The essay was prompted by pictures such as this. Read it here.
2005 "Becoming Second Nature". This is one of three catalogue essays I have written about Dan Holdsworth's work. One for Becks Futures (reprinted on Guardian Unlimited), one for themepark and one for the monograph published by Steidl | Photoworks (2005). Read it here.
2004 "The Eyes Don't Have It" an essay for Eyemazing on one of my favourite bodies of Edgar Martins' work The Reluctant Sitter. Read it here.
2004 "In Search of the North-West Passage". I've long been enamoured by Guy Debord's work and this was a chance to write about his death for the Creation Books publication Straight To Hell: Great Suicides of the 20th Century. Originally published in 2004 (without any footnotes), there is a hidden word puzzle contained in the text that might explain some of the more awkward sentence structures. Read it here.
2003 "Truckworld" / "The Home In Motion" was originally another themepark essay - this time for the "Home" issue. Researching it involved myself and photographer Andrew Cross spending the night at Truckworld near Thurrock and at Clacket Lane Services on the M25. First in themepark in 2001 and then republished in Andrew Hoete's Reader on The Aesthetics of Mobility (Black Dog Press, 2003). Read it here.
2002 "I See A Darkness" an essay for Edgar Martins' first monograph Black Holes and Other Inconsistencies (Mothhouse, 2002). Read it here.
2000 "It's Not The Thought That Counts" was an essay on potlatch for the last ever issue of themepark magazine. I think this ended up on the killspike (even though I was the editor at the time) and was only published on the magazine's webpage. Read it here.
